Digital Portfolio and Class Sketchbook

Finals Class Meeting:
Environment Painting Project, Digital Portfolio, and Completed Sketchbook DUE

Turn in all final versions of Project 01-06 on a USB Flash Drive:

- All images must be: 
  • Properly labeled- "FullName_135_Project(X)_(X).jpg"
    • Ex. Project 03 Character Painting Project-
      • "MichaelMatsumoto_135_Project03_01.jpg"
      • "MichaelMatsumoto_135_Project03_02.jpg"
  • Flattened Image, .JPG format, 300 pixels per inch
Important: Be sure to double-check that your USB/files work on another computer before coming to class. Corrupted files/flash drive will not be excused and will negatively affect your project grade.

Project 06- Self Portrait Study

11"x17" (Portrait Orientation), 300 dpi, Color

Paint a self-portrait based on a photo or from real-life observation using Photoshop.

Requirements:
- Portrait must be in 3/4 view
-Strong light source present in portrait (aka area of high-contrast)
-Different brushes/textures be used for portrait (ie. hair should not be painted same look as skin)
-Must capture your likeness (It isn't a self-portrait, if the portrait doesn't look like you!)

No photo-bashing! Eye dropper tool is allowed, but not recommended.

Project 05- Environment Painting

1. Choose 1 of the following topics to develop your environment painting:

- The Forgotten Temple in the Snowy, Canyon Mountains
- The Forgotten Temple in the Overgrown, Jungle Forest

2. On an 11"x17" image, create nine (11:17 ratio) grey scale thumbnail compositions that show depth, lighting, the focal point, and the environment's traits 

3. Create color keys for strongest thumbnail composition

4. Paint/Photo-bash the environment to final presentation in color

Project 04 -Painting a Mech & Armor

Assignment Guidelines- We will be focusing on "Kit Bashing". Kit bashing, or model bashing  is a practice whereby a new scale model is created by taking pieces out of commercial kits. These pieces may be added to a custom project or to another kit. For professional model makers, kitbashing is popular to create concept models for detailing movie special effects. Commercial model kits are a ready source of "detailing", providing any amounts of identical, mass-produced components that can be used to add fine detail to an existing model. Professionals often kitbash to build prototype parts which are then recreated with lightweight materials.

DONT MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A PHOTO!! Use paint blending techniques.

We will be combining parts of multiple photos together, using adjustments of hue, saturation,color, and levels adjustment, while painting on top of  photos creating blending techniques that will help aide is in developing mech robots from our imagination.

Project 03- Painting a Character Design

Assignment Guidelines- Be able to take a character from your sketchbook, scan it, adjust the line color to match the paint, apply local color, shadows, textures, gradients, high lights.

-Please choose from one of the images below to paint.-


Steps in Class and grading process..
1. Local Color to a Color Change
2. Blending transitions
3.Texture
4.Direction of Light- (Creating change of form and shadows)
5. Line Adjustment- ( We changed the color of the line and erased parts of the line enhance the painting.)
6. Gray Scale Value Overlay- a layer in black, place layer on Hue to see if your value transitions are working correctly. Values should be changing according to form of object.)
