Project 01A- Master Studies

PROJECT 01:

Bring Project 01 as an 11"x17" color print and the digital .PSD file on the due day

On 11"x17", 300 "Pixels Per Inch" (ppi/dpi) Resolution file images, use the basic tools of Photoshop to create and print out:

STUDY 01:
A black & white value study of your choice still life painting that was provided by the instructor.

STUDY 02:
A full-color study of your choice still life painting that was provided by the instructor.

STUDY 03:
full-color study of your choice half-body painting that was provided by the instructor. (Figure must only be viewable from the waist up in the painting to be considered "half-body." Ask the instructor for approval if unsure.)

STUDY 04:
full-color study of your choice full-body figure painting that was provided by the instructor. (Figure must have feet or lower-half of legs in painting to be considered "full-body." Ask the instructor for approval if unsure.)

STUDY 05:
full-color study of your choice environment painting that was provided by the instructor. (Any human figures and animals cannot be bigger than 1/5 of entire painting to be considered an eligible environment painting. Ask the instructor for approval if unsure.)

Using the Photoshop painting tools and references provided, complete FIVE master studies.

The objective of this assignment:

1. Begin the master study from the images provided. Be faithful to the master study. Do not use the color picker. Do not trace. This is an exercise that over time will pump up your skills very quickly.

2. Make your study and the master work the same size/ratio. This makes it easier for you. Do not make it harder for yourself.

3. Time limit- 1 Hour MINIMUM at the very least. This is the minimum to get the full benefit, but you're welcome to put a lot more time into it. The longer you spend on it, the better you will get from this exercise.

4. Try to see how the artist worked and bring this into your study. Match the color and shapes in broad strokes, leave details out unless you have the time later. Go from largest shapes of color first, and small details like fingernails and eyelashes should be ignored to the end.

5. Work on the study at a small, zoomed out format- this will stop you from making those details and enable you to focus on capturing the essence of the study. You can make it larger later.

- File must be labeled in the format "LastName_FirstName_DART135_Project01_XX.psd" ("XX" will correlate to which Study # the master study belongs with. For example, the black and white still life master study would be called "Doe_John_DART135_Project135_01.psd)
- Must include Class Signature in bottom right corner of image
- Must include actual master study positioned to the left or up above on the same page as your study.

Consider the following:

- Use multiple layers to create a more editable painting (ex. line art layer, base painting layer, value painting layer, color layer, shadow layer, details layer, etc.)

- Use the clipping masks to help you control your edges more easily while you paint

- Explore using different Blending Modes (i.e. Multiply) and Color Adjustments during this time to fine tune your workflow

-Remember to watch all the video links in the blog's "00- Photoshop 101" for extra help with the software

Recommended Reads for the Achieving Artist

The following list of books are, without a doubt, a small selection of the most useful books that I, and many successful artists, have read and studied while going through art school and working professionally.

Art Fundamentals: Color, Light, Composition, Anatomy, Perspective, and Depth, Gilles Beloeil
      - This book will do a great job providing a "crash course" of explaining the fundamentals to creating dynamic art and design. This is the basic information on art fundamentals you are expected to know before anything else.

Picture This: How Pictures Work, Molly Bang
     - This book focuses on how composition works on the human brain. It's very short and is not a hard read in the slightest. However, it does a great job covering, what I consider to be, key concepts of design that are used repeatedly by effective designers and storytellers in the industry.

How to Draw, Scott Robertson
     - This is a must buy if you want to know how to draw anything correctly.

How to Render, Scott Robertson
     - This is another must buy if you want to know how to render anything correctly.

Figure Drawing For All Its Worth, Andrew Loomis
     - Loomis is one of the many masters of figure drawing. I not only go to figure drawing sessions, but I redraw and study the figure drawings of Loomis to better my own understanding. Any Loomis book is helpful, and luckily, he was gracious enough to provide FREE PDF versions of his books online.

Color and Light: A Guide for a Realist Painter, James Gurney
     - This is another must-buy if you want to begin understanding how to effective see and use color and light.

Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers, Marcos Mateu-Mestre
     - If you are interested in being an illustrator, storyboard artist, comic book artist, or any kind of artist that wants to create dynamic and effective compositions, this is a must-buy. This book does a great job in explaining a much more advanced level of composition and how the human brain will perceive the image and narrative.

Composition of Outdoor Painting, Edgar Payne
     - If you want to learn more and get better at creating art related to background environment art, this book is a must buy. A lot of great insight from one of the masters of outdoor painting in regards to composition and art philosophy.

Alla Prima II, Everything I Know About Painting- and More, Richard Schmid
     - This book provides a great perspective on the philosophy and techniques of painting. Schmid is a master of traditional painting and the teachings he provides in this book can easily be applied to enriching digital painting. This book is a limited print, so it may not be the most affordable price. But how much are you willing to pay for a master's lifetime of information on painting?
